Homeo-pathy was introduced into the UK by Dr F H F Quin (1799-1878) in the 1830's. After
graduating MD in 1820 in Edinburgh, Dr Quin then became the Duchess's family physician and
travelled with her entourage. He met Dr Hahnemann (1755-1843), the founder of homeo-pathy,
and travelled extensively in Europe, residing for a time in Rome and Naples. He is said to
have successfully used Camphor against Cholera in Moravia (Czechoslovakia) and to have
cured himself of the condition by following Hahnemann's advice (5). During the 1830's and
40's he spent a lot of time in Paris among the inner circle of Hahnemann's proteges(6).
Being already fluent in French(7) he 'became very highly respected in France and was
considered Hahnemann's greatest successor...he spent a year in Paris and continued to
correspond with Hahnemann until Hahnemann's death.'(8) 'Quin was revered by the French as
Hahnemann's greatest successor.' (9) Hahnemann occupied a special seat as Honorary
President of the Gallic Homeopathic Society: 'after his death this honour was transferred
to the English Dr Quin...'(10)
He introduced homeopathy into the very highest levels of
English society: to Dukes, Counts, Lords, minor Royals and Baronets (11). That was the
world he was at ease with and in which he had moved since birth. As a young man he was a
very popular socialite and wit on the fashionable London circuit, a great friend of
Charles Dickens (1812-1870), William Thackeray (1811-1863) and the Royal portraitist,
Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), amongst many others, and no society party, or social
gathering, it was said, was complete without him(12).
By nature of a very pleasing disposition, he was a man of great personal charm. Often
called the 'last of the English wits' (13), and 'a notorious dandy'(14) he was also
latterly one of the regular dining partners of Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910),
the future King(15) Quin seems to have concentrated exclusively on introducing homeo-pathy
amongst medically qualified doctors and their predominantly upper-class clientele.
(16) This level of high society support for homeo-pathy, generated by Quin's efforts,
worked enormously to its advantage and greatly assisted its easy acceptance into the
British medical marketplace. The fact that many of the German relatives of the British
Royal family were also devoted patrons of homeo-pathy, including Queen Adelaide
(1792-1849), wife of King William IV (1765-1837), probably also assisted its rapid
social acceptance in Britain(17). Rich patrons of homeo-pathy (eg. the first Marquess of
Anglesey, 1768-1854) not only formed its client-base, but also funded and numerically
dominated the committees which ran the many homeo-pathic hospitals and dispensaries of
the last century(18).
